au jardin des illusions
Carmontelle was a topographer, reader for the Duke of Chartres, parties organiser and transparencies inventor. He gave a portrayal of the society of his time. His paintings tell the everyday life in the 18th century, the theatre, the gardens, the extraordinary parties. Art critic and author of funny and irresistible proverbs, he deserves to be known. He lived in the Palais-Royal and observed the Ancien Régime’s last years. He brings back to life this period of the Enlightenment which ends, like mirages, in destruction.
