Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) painted the portraits of the czar, the Empress Catherine and several figures of the russian court. Gresset called him “the pupil of the Graces”. Its success was considerable. If its art is artificial and theatrical, its gesture is graceful and spiritual, its colour is exquisite and delicate. He was the ultimate portraitist of the Louis XV court.
